In-Depth Review of
Facebook Dating

Most people have a Facebook account, so it’s no surprise that the company made the leap to online dating. After all, they already have all of your information including your name, age, photos, interests, friends, family, and so on. With all that data already in one place, it makes sense to use it and connect people with like-minded individuals.

So the real question is, “How’s that working out?” Are Facebook Dating members using it to go on dates, make friends, fall in love, or just for casual flings? That’s what we’re here to answer!

The part that stands out the most about Facebook Dating is its price point—absolutely free. You read that correctly, every feature is completely free. There is no premium service if you want more out of the site.

And to quell your concerns, the Facebook Dating platform is completely separate from your regular Facebook account. That means you use a totally different profile and chat box to protect your privacy. In fact, none of your friends or family will know that you are using it if you don’t want them to.

Using Facebook Dating is completely free, although you will be exposed to ads from Facebook.

Signing Up for Facebook Dating

As mentioned in the overview, your dating profile is separate from your regular Facebook account. That means you’ll have to go to the dating tab of your Facebook app, which can be found at the bottom of the screen (look for the heart icon). The process for creating your account doesn’t differ too much from other dating apps. You provide your name, hobbies, photos, job title, and some other details.

The main concerns people have with Facebook Dating have to do with privacy. To address those issues, you’ll want to go to Settings and then General. There you’ll see that your Facebook Dating profile can be “seen by anyone who joins Dating, except for your current Facebook friends and anyone you’ve blocked.” If you would like to get matched with your Facebook friends, you can disable this feature. But if you don’t want to be matched with certain friends, you can Block people in Dating.

The main reason people with Facebook accounts are hesitant to join Dating is that they think their friends and family will know they’re using it. That simply isn’t the case. Facebook Dating will not appear on your regular Facebook feed and your dating profile will not show up on your friends’ dating accounts unless you ask the app to show them.

Member Structure

Most members come from the United States but there is still a large portion of users located in the UK. Members come from diverse backgrounds and are mainly straight singles interested in heterosexual relationships. There are also slightly more men than women but the ratio is even enough that you probably won’t even notice. Most of the singles we saw on Facebook Dating were on the younger side, typically between the ages of 24 and 35 (young single professionals).

Matching Process

The good (and sometimes bad) thing about Facebook Dating is that they use tons of data they’ve collected over the years to connect you with like-minded singles. When you press the Dating tab, you’ll immediately be shown a potential match with the person’s photo, name, age, and location. You can either press the heart or X icon to like or pass on the profile. Or, you can open the person’s profile to reveal more about them before deciding if you like them or not. Of course, once you and someone else have mutually liked each other, the app will alert you that there is mutual interest.

Some of the features that set Facebook Dating apart from other dating apps is its “More to Explore” section underneath the featured profiles. Here you can take a “Second Look” to check out previously suggested matches that you’ve passed on. You can see “Events in Common” and match with people that have signed up for the same events. You can get suggested matches with singles that have joined the same Facebook groups in “Groups in Common.” You can also use the “Secret Crush” feature and add singles that you are interested into your list.

Contact Options

Facebook Dating differs from other dating apps in that you don’t have to mutually like each other to start a conversation. You can simply message whoever you want. However, you cannot just send any message you’d like, such as “Hey.” This will not suffice. Instead, you need to comment on the person’s photo or ask a question related to the information provided in their profile. Once the message is sent, you won’t be able to view the person’s profile again until (if) they respond.

Facebook Dating App

As mentioned previously, Facebook Dating is not a stand-alone application. You need to open your Facebook app and then go to the Dating tab. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you will need to create one. This is the only way you’ll be able to use Facebook Dating. We know that seems inconvenient for people that try to avoid social media, but Facebook is mostly counting on their members to use the dating platform. Considering Facebook has nearly 3 billion users worldwide, they are not concerned too much about those non-social media users.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to like about Facebook Dating—it’s completely free to use, mostly young professionals use the service, people are interested in long-term relationships, and you most likely already have the app downloaded on your mobile device. All you need to do is set up your separate dating profile and start browning singles in your area. You can start sending messages today without even matching with another user. For these reasons, we think it’s worth it to at least give Facebook Dating a shot.
