In-Depth Review of
Bumble

Bumble first took the world by storm as the first dating app designed to put women in charge of who they match and chat with.

Done were the days of women’s inboxes getting bombarded with boring and nasty messages. Putting women in the driver’s seat meant they got to make first contact, and if they didn’t, the match went no further.

What made Bumble famous then is what still makes it popular now. Once a match is made between two people, the woman needs to make contact within 24 hours or the match disappears. This ensures members check their profile activity on a daily basis, making the Bumble experience all that more entertaining.

Over the years, Bumble extended its reach to people interested in business relationships and friendships.

That means more people are using the app in all facets of their social lives—Dating, Bizz, and BFF. The company also launched a publication recently that goes by the name Bumble Mag, where members can read those three subjects.

Signing Up for Bumble

The sign-up process on Bumble is quick and easy if you register using your Facebook account. If not, the process still doesn’t take that long. But through Facebook, the app can take information from your account to populate fields automatically. This should only take 1-2 minutes to complete. Whether you sign up with your phone number or Facebook account, you’ll need to share your phone’s location so that Bumble can find you singles nearby. You also need to upload a photo before you start swiping on potential matches.

Member Structure

So, who’s really signed up here? With 1.6 million users based in the UK and 6.3 million monthly visits throughout the world, there’s no shortage of potential matches for you. In fact, we were surprised how many male members there are on Bumble considering it’s a dating app that puts women in control. That means men have no problem with not being able to message first. That might also mean men actually like the idea of putting the ball in the woman’s court because they don’t have to feel the pressure of making the first move.

Of the members on the app, most are young professionals in their 20s and 30s. However, research has shown that not all age groups use Bumble for the same purposes. According to Statistica, most users in their 30s and 40s use the app to find dates and long-term relationships, while members in their 20s tend to use the app for social purposes. That means people in their 30s and 40s are using the dating part of the app, and people in their 20s are using the Bizz and BFF parts of the app.

Matching Process

Much like Tinder and other similar dating apps, Bumble relies on its swipe left or right matching system to connect singles. So when you like someone and they like you back, the app notifies you of the match and then you can start a conversation—kind of. As we mentioned, women have the power on Bumble, meaning they have to message first once a match has been made. We’ll get into that more in the next section.

Also like Tinder, the first potential matches you’re shown are most likely people that have already liked you. This is intentional because the goal of Bumble is to get you dates. Otherwise, if they showed you singles that haven’t seen your profile, no matches would ever occur. However, the only way you know if another person likes you is if you’re a Premium member who can see your Beeline or someone SuperSwiped you. Neither Standard nor Premium users can see if someone checked out their profile.

Contact Options

This is where Bumble differs from other dating apps. Since women have to make the first move once a match has been made, men have no other option but to hope and wait. And because women only have 24 hours to make contact once a match has been made, they need to make sure they’re checking their Bumble app on a daily basis. For these reasons, matching and not getting responses can be frustrating. But that’s also what makes Bumble so exciting and different.

For gay and lesbian members, anyone can make the first move, which kind of defeats the purpose of Bumble’s slogan, but it makes sense for obvious reasons. But the 24-hour window to message still applies here. Also, when using Bizz or BFF, anyone can make the first move as well because these features aren’t about romantic relationships.

Bumble App

The great thing about the Bumble app is that the Standard membership gets you everything you need to match, chat, and meet. You can swipe, video chat, audio chat, apply basic search filters, extend one match per day, earn profile badges, and even play the question game. Plus you can switch between Dating, BFF, and Bizz mode.

If you want more out of the Bumble app, you can pay for the Premium membership subscription plan. That gets you access to advanced filters, access to your Beeline so you can see who liked you, the Backtrack to revisit profiles, Travel Mode, unlimited swipes, and much more.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to go on a lot of first dates, Bumble is a great dating app. As a serious dating app, we’d like to see profiles with more information about the person’s lifestyle, interests, hobbies, and preferences. But it’s a fun app to make friends, form business relationships, and swipe endlessly on potential matches. In a way, Bumble is like a social hub (kind of like a bar) where you can walk up to people and start conversations. It’s a better option than Tinder if you’re looking for something more serious and long-term.
