In-Depth Review of
Grindr

Launched in 2009, Grindr was known as the first gay geosocial app. The platform quickly became the most popular mobile app for gay men throughout the world and has since stayed that way.

Grindr doesn’t try to be any more than a network that helps connect gay, bi, trans, and queer people. It doesn’t promise that you’ll find love or long-term companionship or anything like that—its job is to help members discover each other and meet up.

Grindr also takes a public stance on equality and raises awareness about social issues in the LGBTQ community.

They have many initiatives both big and small throughout communities to help with issues regarding sexual health, safety, advocacy, and much more. You can visit Grindr For Equality to learn about what they’ve been up to and how you can help their cause.

Signing Up for Grindr

First, you should download the Grindr app from the Apple App Store or the Android Play Store in order to sign up for their service. You can then press SIGN UP at the bottom of the screen before being asked to accept the terms and conditions and privacy policies—pretty standard stuff.

You have a few options to register. You can create an account using your email address, Google account, or Facebook account. Simply follow the instructions they give you until they ask you to add a photo of yourself. You can snap a few selfies of yourself or upload photos from your library. Grindr prohibits any nudity or pornography.

Grindr doesn’t require you to provide information but they do want your date of birth, display name, and gender. After pressing SAVE, you can choose to hide your age while using the app. You also need to give Grindr permission to use your device’s location before they can display members in your area.

Lastly, you will choose your relationship preferences such as chat, friends, networking, or dates. This will be shown to other users when they visit your profile. That’s the last step before pressing NEXT and going live.

Member Structure

There are estimated to be nearly one million Grindr members located in the UK. For a niche social networking app, we’d say that’s relatively impressive. Most users are pretty active on the platform so it shouldn’t be too difficult to connect with another member as long as you are in a populated area. And you shouldn’t have to worry too much about fake profiles because the app uses the member’s location. However, you should always be careful and look for signs that someone is trying to scam you.

With over 27 million users around the globe in nearly every country, Grindr is a great app to use while travelling as well. You can connect with people from different cultures, beliefs, backgrounds, and personalities. However, on the app, many members don’t divulge too much information and stay anonymous by not uploading any photos. Most users are looking for something fun, sexual, or short-term.

Matching Process

When logged into Grindr, the platform will first show you all the users within your immediate surroundings. As a location-based app, it’s easy to hook up with users while out and about. But you can also refine your search by using the filter option to find a match that suits your preferences.

If you pay for Grindr’s premium service, you can take advantage of the Explore feature and search for members in different cities or countries. You can also search by age, looking for, tribe, and so on. With the paid membership, you have more filters to select from, such as online now, height, weight, body type, ethnicity, and more.

Unlike a lot of popular dating apps, Grindr doesn’t try to match you with like-minded individuals. You can simply show interest in another member and start communicating with whomever you want.

Contact Options

There are a few ways to make contact on Grindr. Instead of sending a like, you can send a member a Looking, Friendly, or Hot emoticon to inform them of the type of interest you have in them.

As a basic member, you can talk to anyone you want. You can start a chat or send a message to start a conversation with people in your area. Conversations can be organised by favourites or unread messages to help you keep track of ongoing communication.

One of the fun ways members of Grindr like to communicate is through Gaymojis. This is a free keyboard that anyone can download for free on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. With over 500 LGBTQ-themed emoticons to choose from, you’ll learn quickly what they all mean once you start chatting with other members.

Who you are interested in and what you are looking for play a big part on Grindr. You will want to identify your sexual preferences to help other members decide if they want to show interest. For example, your tribe can be a Bear, Daddy, Twink, Trans, Rugged, and so on.

What you’re interested in also helps other members when deciding if they want to interact with you. You can say you’re interested in chat, friendship, dates, networking, relationships, or right now. The last option is fairly straightforward, right now to hook up.

Grindr App

While there is an option to use Grindr from your personal computer, nearly all members use the mobile app. As a location-based service, you will get much more out of the app than the desktop version. The design of the app is straightforward, easy to navigate, and user-friendly. It mostly focuses on connecting people to meet and have fun rather than personality matching.

Conclusion

As a casual social network for gay bi, trans and queer people, Grindr provides an excellent platform for people to find each other and meet up. The GPS-location feature makes it easy to meet up with strangers from all over the world from different backgrounds and ethnicities. You can choose to find friendships, hookups, dates, or use the app for networking purposes. Basic and paying members can chat with anyone on the app, and also block anyone they find offensive. Overall, there’s a lot to like.
