Hinge claims that its app is the only dating app meant to be deleted. While this doesn’t necessarily seem like a great business plan, they do have a point. Other dating apps are made to be addicting and fun so that you keep coming back for more.
While this is all and good, shouldn’t you choose a dating platform that finds you love at first sight? Definitely, if that’s what you’re interested in.
The question is whether Hinge has produced a product and service to back up this claim. Its website promises to connect you with like-minded singles and promising dates with a Nobel Prize-winning algorithm.
Already, that sounds pretty intriguing. It starts with detailed profiles and the ability to like certain prompts. That means you don’t just like someone’s entire profile (you can do that too), you can like individual prompts within each profile.
We have to admit this is a different concept. To even activate your profile, you need to answer at least 3 prompts.
These can pertain to deep political feelings or something as mundane as your opinion about cilantro. In addition to liking someone’s prompt, you can also comment on it to increase your chances of starting a conversation. This is all part of the Hinge experience that helps the platform “introduce you to the right people.”

Hinge used to be one of those dating apps that required you to sign in through your Facebook account in order to register. Nowadays, they give you the option to create an account using just your phone number, with the option to add your Facebook or Apple login. Either way, you’ll still have to authenticate your account with a verified phone number.
You’ll have to download the app to create an account. We went to Hinge’s website and it doesn’t have much to offer besides their blog section. Once you open the app and start registering, you will answer questions about who you’re interested in and your preferred age, distance, religion, ethnicity, etc. If you want to avoid seeing certain people, you can designate some fields as dealbreakers.
Additional information includes your Virtues (work, school, politics, etc.), Vitals (height, children, location, etc.), and Vices (smoking, drinking, and drug habits). And finally you get to the fun questions, or Icebreakers to get conversations started with other singles. These can be your strengths, weaknesses, weird gifts you’ve received, or something you want to know about someone else.
Then you get to the Prompts, which are an entertaining way of getting other members active with your profile. Here are some fun ones: “Dating me is like…,” “Facts about me that surprise people…,” “Green flags I look for…,” and “I want someone who…” Complete these sentences and get people to comment or like what you said. You can also pair photos with Prompts like “Feeling cute, might delete later.”
Our best estimation is there are 500,000 or more members in the United Kingdom. Most of which are between the ages of 24 to 32. Hinge claims to have a gender ratio of 1 : 1. If true, that’s impressive for a dating app that allows you to view profiles, message members, and see who sent you likes for free.
Because Hinge takes matchmaking more seriously than Tinder-like dating apps, most members use the app to find meaningful relationships. With Prompts and photos to comment on and like, activity is high on Hinge. Just be sure to look out for scammers because there have been reports of fake accounts.
Match takes the fun part about Tinder and makes it more interactive and personal. You can still like someone’s entire profile, but you also have the option to like their Prompts and photos. Even more, you can comment or ask questions about their photos or prompts to really get the ball rolling. Those that comment with something a little more engaging than “Hi” tend to get more responses. When liking a paid member’s profile, they have to like you back before either of you can start a conversation with each other. Paid members can see who likes them, which gives them an advantage in preparing what to say.
When presented with a profile, you will have the option to like or pass on them much like other dating apps. The difference is that you can like different aspects of their profile as well such as photos and prompts. Taking things a step further, you can even add a comment to your like to help get a conversation started. But you can still do things the old-fashioned way by simply liking each other and receiving a notification. Once a match has been made, you can start messaging. However, you can only send text messages, no photos or videos.
It’s just that, an app. Hinge was solely made as a fun and engaging app for tech-savvy young professionals. It’s got all the cool-looking bells and whistles you’d expect out of a modern dating app. However, unlike modern social dating apps, Hingle takes matchmaking seriously while trying to connect you with like-minded singles that are interested in more than just hooking up.
We like Hinge because the Match Group has combined all the good things about Match, OkCupid, and Tinder. The seriousness of finding you a compatible partner from Match, the fun swipe-left-or-right of Tinder, and the fun questions and in-depth analysis of OkCupid. The app is also beautifully designed, intuitive, and easy to navigate. While it does lack some contact features that others provide, it’s still a great platform to find meaningful connections that lead to successful relationships—a lot of the time.
